It is with great sorrow that we inform you that Doree Barton, MD died on April 3.  Dr. Barton founded Digestive Health Specialists, in Lowell, almost thirty-five years ago.  A devoted and deeply caring physician, she was a leader in clinical gastroenterology and her impact on the Greater Lowell Community has been profound, as is her loss to her family, patients, medical staff and colleagues.

We will work to be sure all of her patients continue to receive excellent, compassionate care. Please feel free to contact our office at any time should you have any questions or concerns.

Recently, you may have heard reports regarding infections that were transmitted to patients from a certain type of endoscope.

These infections have been very serious, and have been found at a few centers nationwide.

The type of scope affected is called a "duodenoscope", or "ERCP scope". This is a scope that is used to evaluate the ducts that extend from the liver and pancreas to the intestine.

There have been no reports of infected duodenoscopes in Massachusetts, this type of scope is NOT used at Northeast Endoscopy, and is used at Lowell General Hospital for only special procedures (ERCP) which involve viewing the bile duct and pancreatic duct.

Routine upper endoscopy and colonoscopy do not involve using a duodenoscope/ERCP scope.

For further reassurance, we have reviewed our procedures for cleaning, and they remain up to the highest standards, with no evidence of any increased risk for infection. We have been working with endoscope experts to adopt the most sophisticated and thorough measures to ensure your procedure is safe.

We are committed to the safety of every patient.

We will continue to follow the story, and be sure to respond to any further concerns that are raised. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to speak with your physician regarding any further questions you may have.  For all of us at Digestive Health Specialists, it remains a privilege to be involved in your care.
